Meet Maisie!

Maisie & students

Maisie is a 6 year old goldendoodle. She is fully trained with her Canine Good Citizen Certification with her handler, Samantha Teixeira, a school counselor at GHS and owner of Maisie. Mrs. Teixeira has completed the Therapy Animal Handler Course through AKC recognized organization, Pet Partners.

Maisie attends school on Mondays & Thursdays, under the direct supervision of Mrs. Teixeira  when she is in the building. You can find her in the Guidance office but she visits classrooms, the Roosevelt Room, and spends time in the hallways. Any student who is seen for counseling support in the Guidance office will come into contact with Maisie unless you request otherwise.

According to Animal Assisted Therapy expert, Cynthia Chandler, “Animals in counseling sessions facilitate an environment of trust, nurturance and relationship building. The therapy animal is a non judgemental companion in the process of learning and development.” Research shows that this interaction can improve self- esteem, concentration, communication, and expression of feelings. Maisie is also an excellent source of fun and unconditional love and we are thrilled to have her back for another year at Gorham High School.
